I am very excited today to feature CrossFit Gettysburg in my small business series! I love that in this post I can give you information on what CrossFit Gettysburg has to offer, and share some of my personal experiences with this awesome local business.
CrossFit Gettysburg is located at 5 South Washington Street in Gettysburg, and they just opened their doors in June of 2013. The staff has been blown away by the response in the community, and the CrossFit Gettysburg family is rapidly growing!
CrossFit is a fitness program that combines strength training and conditioning exercises in a structured environment. Each workout is instructed by highly trained coaches with many years of experience. Members enjoy a DIFFERENT workout referred to as a WOD (workout of the day) at each session. That’s right, no more getting bored with the same old routine. I also love the fact that the strength training and WOD can be modified or scaled to suit anyone’s needs. There truly is no age or “type” that is best for CrossFit. It can work for anyone with the motivation to show up and work hard.
CrossFit is not a quick fix, or something that you do for a few weeks. It is a program that is designed to grow with you through your life. CrossFit Gettysburg offers daily classes Monday – Friday at 5:30 am, 6:30 am, 9:00 am, 12:00 pm, and 6:30 pm, and Saturday morning at 8:00 am, so you can find the class that best suits your schedule. The coaches are there to encourage and motivate you from the minute you step in the gym. They truly care about their members and want you to succeed in your fitness goals, whatever they may be. I have tried doing workout DVDs, and I have also worked out at regular gyms, but there was never anyone there to correct me if I wasn’t doing exercises properly. The coaches at CrossFit Gettysburg watch each member during the workouts to ensure that proper techniques are being used in each exercise to avoid injury, and so that you get the most out of your workout.
When you decide to become a member of the CrossFit Gettysburg family, you will first take a foundations course to learn the proper techniques for the workouts. Foundations courses are small classes where the coaches break down the skills that you will need to be successful during the normal class workouts. Once you have completed the foundations class, you can attend as many classes a month as you would like.
CrossFit Gettysburg offers several membership options, and pricing can be found on the Crossfit Gettysburg website. You even get to try out a free class before enrolling in the foundations course, so you can give it a try and see if CrossFit is the right fit for you. In my opinion, joining CrossFit Gettysburg is one of the best investments you can make, because it is an investment in yourself and your health.

My CrossFit Story:
I started at CrossFit Gettysburg in August when one of my friends asked me to check it out with her. I had never heard of CrossFit, but thought it wouldn’t hurt to see what it was all about. Growing up I was always involved in gymnastics or other sports, but over the past 10 years, I haven’t really found any kind of fitness program that I have been able to stick with. I went to a CrossFit class to try it out, and I will be honest, it was hard. I made it through the warm up and strength exercises fine, but halfway through the WOD, I was ready to quit. The WOD consisted of lunges and running for 15 minutes, and about 7 minutes into it, I swore the clock was broken and just standing still. If I had been at home doing this workout on my own, I know I would have given up. But the encouragement from the coaches and other CrossFit members also doing the work out kept me going. After I completed the WOD I felt a huge sense of accomplishment! I also had so much energy for the rest of the night and I knew this was something I wanted to try!
After that first class, I decided I would give CrossFit a try for a month and see how I liked it. Well, now I am 6 weeks into my CrossFit journey, and I love it! I originally thought I would like to go 2-3 times a week for the workouts, but I am hooked, and now going 4-5 times a week. I can’t believe the difference that I am seeing in such a short period of time. I am stronger than I ever thought I was, and I am finding muscles I never knew I had. One of the things that CrossFit has taught me is that exercise is just as much for your mental health as it is physical. We are all so busy trying to fit everything in, and if you are like me, I am always thinking of what I need to get done each day. I have a to-do list constantly going through my mind, and it is very hard for me to turn that off in my head. However, when I am at CrossFit, it is like a mental break. I am only thinking about getting through the next set of pull-ups or burpees. I have also learned that believing that you are able to do the workout is half of the battle. If you had told me I was going to run a mile without stopping 6 weeks ago I would have said you were crazy. But 2 weeks into CrossFit, I ran a mile, didn’t stop, and felt great afterward. Two weeks after that, I ran 3 miles on my own without stopping. I have never been a runner, and never really enjoyed running, but I decided I was going to do it, and more importantly believed I could.
I love the sense of community that is built into CrossFit, and the coaches are awesome at motivating and encouraging members through each workout. When you become a member at CrossFit Gettysburg, you become a member of the CrossFit Gettysburg family. It’s really fun to work out each day with other people working toward the same goals. And let’s be honest, like my family, they are the only people to see me at the crack of dawn with no make-up on and my hair a mess!
I would definitely recommend CrossFit Gettysburg to anyone looking for a great workout program that will constantly challenge and motivate you. Give it a try; it just might change your life! Hope to see at the gym!
